Why so square?

In my last semester of university I had to create a modular world with: environment, characters and type (which I have previously uploaded).  We were given four basic shapes; a triangle, a square, a circle and a pill shape, we could only use those shapes to create our world but we could use other shapes to cut pieces out of shapes.  When I first got the project I was extremely excited about the type and created a few ideas for that first then I moved onto the character designs, and I decided that I wanted to create so fun, childish styled character that would be playful in style and colour.  I wanted them to be attractive to the eye and pleasing to all ages.  These few were my first brainstorming:

They were quite simple in style and so I wanted to bring them forward, playing around with adding texture by overlaying the shapes and bringing more depth and colour to the people.  I really got into these designs and I spent hours on each of the following, I wanted to make them quite retro quite cool.  I think that I suceeded with that.

CHARACTERPEOPLE1

I really wanted to pair these two as they are complete opposites: your typical popular blonde and your scruffy indie boy.  I styled the guy on a sort of Survivor style contestant, I loved messing with his hair, placing circle upon circle.  The blonde I loved adding the different coloured layers to her hair, she was styled on your typical american cheerleader.  They look so uncomfortable together I love it.

The curly haired girl makes me laugh each time I see here, she reminds me of Amy Winehouse, but she was actaully styled on my little sister.  I loved creating her hair and layering the circles and adding a few highlights to make it pop and give it texture.  The red head was styled upon myself, I absolutely adored creating the hair it was so much fun to create the crazy style.  I ended up choosing not to use these in my final modular book as they were far too simple for what I went onto create, but I think that they were a great starting point.
